Instructor Profiles

Raymond Morcomb 3rd Dan

Raymond Morcomb commenced his own training in March 1989 at 8 years of age (under the guidance of instructor Jake Leslie) with the Castle Hill Karate Club. Under Chief Instructor Takahashi Sensei, Ray graded for his 1st Dan black belt in August 1991, his 2nd Dan in March 1996 and his 3rd in August 2001 at 20 years of age (the youngest 3rd Dan in the history of the J.K.A.A.). In March 2002 he was selected on to the Australian national karate team (a long term goal of Raymond’s.)

Inspired by his original instructor Jake Leslie, Ray has always dreamed of teaching Karate in his own dojo. Having traveled to Japan, the U.K., France, and New Zealand - Ray has gained some of the very best training and competition experience available in the world today. Ray has trained under the guidance of such world-renowned masters and karate-ka as Takahashi, Nishimura, Shoji, Nakamura, Mimura, and Terashima. Ray Morcomb and the Northern Districts Dojo hope to continue the growth and strengthening of its students along with supporting Takahashi Sensei and the Japan Karate Association of Australia.

Joel Norrgard 2nd Dan

I began training in late 1988 under Jake Leslie Sensei. Jake Sensei taught us the meaning of "spirit" in karate through hard training. I obtained my 1st Dan in 1991 at the age of 12. At the end of 1994, 3 years off training was had due to unforeseen circumstances , but the desire to come back was still there, so by the end of 1997 I was back in training. In March of 1999 I obtained my 2nd Dan.

The highlight of my karate is still from the Australasian Titles in Lake Taupo, New Zealand 1999, where Sempai Ray, Sempai Kelly Morcomb and myself won 1st place in Dojo Team Kata, the highlight was not in the winning but in the hard training leading up to the event.

Ray Sempai has always been the template for both physical karate and karate spirit for me and I aim to support him in his endeavors whilst finding my own potential in the art.
